General Tips when visiting Burma

Currency

The local currency is the Kyat. Currency exchange controls in Burma are strict. Avoid changing any money in or outside of tourist hotels.

Electricity

Electricity: 220/230V, 50 Hz. The electricity supply can be erratic, especially outside of major cities.

Health

As always when travelling, it is essential to have good health insurance and consult your doctor about necessary health precautions, such as vaccinations or pills. There are basic medical facilities available in Myanmar.

Language

The Burmese language belongs to the group of Tibetan-Burmese languages, which in turn is part of the Sino-Tibetan group of languages. Burmese is spoken by about 80 percent of the population of Myanmar, and is the official language of the country. Besides Burmese, there are more than 100 languages and local dialects spoken in different regions and by different ethnic groups. English is widely spoken, especially in business and tourist areas.

Security

Most tourists find that Myanmar is an exceptionally friendly and safe country to explore, within the confines of the tourist areas established by the government. Although some fighting continues along the Thai border, this does not affect any of the main tourist areas. Due to road conditions, overnight travel is not recommended.

Transportation

Air -The best way to get around in Myanmar is by flying. Air Mandalay, Air Bagan and Yangon Airways are reputable private airways and provide services to all regional centres. However, flights often depart early in the morning, and flight schedules are limited particularly in the low season.

Train - The train service is wonderful for those who would like to experience the British Raj style of travel although standards are very basic. Big delays do occur due to climatic and technical problems.

Boat - Cruises on the major arterial rivers are also very popular and a restive form of transport for those with time on their hands. Trips can usually be arranged as part of an organized tour group.
