General Tips for travel in Taiwan

Currency

The currency is the New Taiwan Dollar.

Electricity / Water

Taiwan uses electric current of 110 volts at 60 cycles. Drinking water served at hotels and

restaurants is distilled or boiled. It's NOT suggested to drink directly from the tap.

Transportation

Airlines: Taiwan's international air routes are served by 34 airlines that fly to 56 major cities throughout the world. Four carriers operate domestic routes that reach to all of the

island's main cities and offshore islands.

Bus: Scheduled buses run from the airports to all major cities. Island-wide and regional bus companies also operate inter-city services that cover the whole island.

MRT: There are MRT systems in Taipei City and Kaohsiung

City. The Taipei MRT has eight routes and the Kaohsiung MRT has two routes. The Kaohsiung MRT also links with the Taiwan High Speed Rail (THSR) and Taiwan Railway lines, and provides service to Kaohsiung International Airport.

Taxi: Taxis with meters are conveniently available in all cities and large towns. Passengers will be charged according to the meter.

Taiwan High Speed Railway:

With the opening of the Taiwan High Speed Rail (THSR), visitors can now easily take a day trip between Kaohsiung and Taipei. Currently eight stations are operational on the THSR line along Taiwan's western corridor: Taipei, Banqiao, Taoyuan, Hsinchu, Taichung, Chiayi, Tainan and Zuoying (Kaohsiung), and three more are in the planning stage.

THSR Ticketing

Railway: Trains on the round-the-island rail network provide extremely convenient services. Tickets may be purchased three days in advance.

The island-wide railway network including the western line, the eastern line, the north line and the south line, provides a lot of convenience to the passengers.
