Fiji
Bula ! The greeting you will hear everywhere
from everyone. Not just hello, but a warm hello, a sign of the really warm hospitality
you will experience in Fiji. A nation of some 330 islands is today a mixture of
Indian, Melanesian and Polynesian cultures.
The two main islands are Viti Levu and Vanua Levu. The capital city of Suva and
main international airport of Nadi are both situated on the island of Viti Levu,
but at opposite ends of the island. The International Dateline runs just offshore
of Vanua Levu so some of Fiji's islands are enjoying yesterday !
Fiji is for Honeymooners, and those seeking romantic scenery. There are also countless
miles of virgin coral reefs providing breathtaking overwater and underwater experiences.
Dress code in the main resorts and on the islands is very informal and most visitors
are soon tempted to adopt the "sulu" which is the Fijian version of the Polynesian
pareau.
There are several international resorts hotels on the island of Viti Levu, stretching
from the Nadi area, along the Coral Coast, and a few around Lautoka and Rakiraki.
There are also several Golf Courses. However those travellers who have a vision
of the south seas should either head out to one of the islands or a combination.
A flight on Air Fiji or Sunflower Airlines out to Savu Savu or Taveuni is almost
like a scenic flight !
Viti Levu
Located in the Nadi area are the 3 Sheraton Resorts together on Denarau Island
about 20 minutes from the airport. Sheraton Fiji Resort, Sheraton Royal Denarau
Resort, and Sheraton Denarau Villas. A little further along the coast is Sonaisali
Island Resort which features some executive Bures as has an island feel to it
but close to the mainland. Proceeding along the Coral Coast are Shangri La's Fijian
Resort, the Naviti Resort and the Warwick Fiji.
Mamanuca Islands
The
closest group of islands offshore from Nadi, features some superb choices with
easy access by boat, seaplane or helicopter. Having travelled across the world,
those islands that fit the south sea image are Castaway Island, Malolo Island,
and Matamanoa Island (pictured, right), all of which offer Air-Conditioned Bure
accommodation, a romantic setting, watersports, diving, plus excellent food &
wine. Further out is the luxurious Vomo Island offering air-conditioned Villa
type suites on a Full Board Basis.
Vanua Levu & Taveuni
For Deluxe Bures set amongst coconut plantations we suggest Jean-Michel Cousteau
Island Resort or Namale Resort, both not far from Savu Savu airport. Out on Taveuni
is Maravu Plantation and offshore is Matangi Island Resort, a favourite amongst
divers worldwide.
Outer Islands
Those travelers looking for their ideal hideaways should look no further than
Moodys Namena Resort, Yasawa Island Resort, or the fabulous Vatulele Island Resort.
Island Cruising
Those
who prefer some island hopping within the comfort of a cruise ship should choose
one of the 3, 4, or 7 days cruises offered by Blue Lagoon Cruises or Captain Cook
Reef Endeavour Cruises. It is of course quite possible to combine a cruise together
with a stay on one or more selected islands !
