Java

java1.gif (23752 bytes)The landscape of Java is distinguished by its 121 volcanoes, of which some 30 are still active!  From Jakarta, the capital of Java and Indonesia, we can arrange a tour to Mount Krakatau and the Ujung Kulon Nature Reserve.

There are also a number of options for travel overland from Jakarta across Java.  The two most popular depart from Jakarta up into the highlands around Bogor and onwards for overnight in the colonial city of Bandung, 700 metres above sea level.  From Bandung one proceeds to the foot of Mount Slamet for overnight in the highland town of Baturaden.

The next day one climbs up to the Dieng Plateau, 2600 metres above sea level where the relics of Hindu Temples from the 7th century Sanjaya Dynasty are to be found.  The next stop is the world's largest Buddhist sanctuary, Borobudor Temple, before arriving into Yogyakarta for two nights.

java2.gif (22968 bytes)A full day is spent around Yogyakarta including a visit to Prambanan Temple.  From Yogyakarta one proceeds to the city of Solo and onwards to the Pengger Plateau for overnight at the mountain village of Tosari in the shadow of Mount Bromo.

At 04.00 after a short jeep journey and pony ride you arrive at Mount Batok & Mount Bromo to witness dawn from the craters edge over this extraordinary skyline.  Having returned to Tosari for breakfast one can then either proceed to Surabaya for onwards flight or proceed overland via Kalibaru to Ketapang for the ferry to Bali.

It is possible to fly into Yogyakarta for a shorter tour overland to Mt. Bromo and onwards to either Suramade to see the turtles at Pulau Merak Beach.
