08 Nov: Today's hike was 10 miles through giant beech trees and 100 ft monkey puzzle trees at Huerquehue National Park. Very steep and hard work at times but the views are rather good! Our knees are aching somewhat! Off for some proper Chilean food shortly.

Hiking in Huerquehue National Park

Yesterday was a bit of a wash-out but we saw the worse of the weather in front of a blazing log fire in our room. We had a fabulous late lunch in a circular restaurant half way up to a volcano run by a lovely lady from Yorkshire!

Arrived in Puerto Varas. Charming old town on the lakeside. Has an almost Alpine feel if it wasn't for the two giant volcanoes. And even before we arrived, the hairs on the back of my head stood up as we travelled that iconic road, the Pan American Highway. We don't think we have ever been to a more wonderfully varied, sophisticated and friendly country before.
