Best time to visit Jordan

Jordan is a year-round destination with the best months to visit from March to May.  

You’ll enjoy the mildest weather in autumn and especially the spring when wildflowers are in bloom. Summer is long, from May to September and intensely hot & dry, though evenings are much cooler. Rain falls from November to March in the North, but Aqaba on the Red Sea is a warm and sunny winter resort. Winter is an ideal time for Aqaba – Mellow days and warm seawater. Winter can be cold especially in Amman and in the east, temperatures in Amman average 5 oC (41 oF), in Aqaba 16 oC (61 oF). Summer temperatures in Amman average 28 oC (82 oF), in Aqaba 35 oC (95 oF).

About 70 percent of the average rainfall in the country falls between November and March; June through August are often dry.

Best time to go

Amman

Amman enjoys a Eastern Mediterranean climate and can be visited year round. Summers are hot, but bearable, with temperatures averaging a mild 26 degrees in July and August, while rain is non-existent. The best time to visit Amman is during Spring when temperatures are perfect for sightseeing. Winters are mild, but this is the wettest season so don’t forget your jacket, just in case.

Dana Biosphere Reserve

The Dana Biosphere is an area of low rainfall and high sunshine and there are plenty of activities year around.
Winter arrives in December through to the end of February when days are sunny and warm but there will be overcast and rainy days with occasional flash floods. Nights are cold, usually below 10 degrees Celcius. Winter is a great time for hiking as the weather is mild and the air is fresh.
Spring (March-May) is the most popular time of year to visit. With the end of the rainy season, green plants and pink oleanders are in full bloom making spring a beautiful time for hiking. Temperatures are around the mid-20s (Celsius) by the end of March.
Summers from June to September are incredibly hot in the arid desert of Dana Reserve with temperatures reaching the high 30s (Celsius) on most days.
October and November are popular months time as the weather is warm in the day and cooler in the evenings. It’s a great time for hiking.

The Dead Sea

The Dead Sea's climate offers year-round sunny skies and dry air with low pollution. It has less than 100 m mean annual rainfall and a summer average temperature between 32 and 39 °C  Winter average temperatures range between 20 and 23 °C

Time

Business Hours
Friday is the weekly holiday. Banks, government offices and most businesses are closed on Saturdays as well. Many businesses, including airline offices, travel agencies and some shops also close on Thursday afternoon, although department stores and supermarkets remain open.

Currency
The local currency is the Jordanian Dinar. Currency can be exchanged at major banks, exchange booths and at most hotels. Exchange rates are set daily by the Jordanian Central Bank, and the Jordanian Dinar is fixed to the US Dollar at 1 USD = 0.708 JD

Credit Cards
Credit cards are accepted at hotels, restaurants, and larger shops, including American Express, Visa, Diners Club, and MasterCard. Please note that many smaller shops still prefer cash payment in the Jordanian currency, and it’s essential for shopping in the local souks. 

Electricity
Electrical current is 220 volts, 50Hz. requiring European rounded two-prong wall plugs.

Food and Drinks
There are many fine restaurants that offer a wide selection of authentic Arabic food.
Dishes to try: The national dish, Mansaf, a whole stewed lamb with cooked yoghurt sauce served on a bed of rice and bread. Also, the Musakhan dish, which is chicken with onions, olive oil and pine seeds cooked in an oven; in addition, to the classic Middle Eastern barbeque dishes.
Coffee is concentrated and black usually flavoured with cardamom, but tea is even more popular in Jordan. The local alcoholic drink that is popular with Arabic dishes is Arak, a nice flavoured liquor that is mixed with water and ice.

Language
The official language of Jordan is Arabic, but English is widely spoken especially in the cities. 

Local customs
Jordan is a primarily Muslim country. Muslim women’s clothing often covers their arms, legs, and hair. Western women are not subject to these customs, but it will not be appropriate or respectful to wear very revealing clothing. Topless sunbathing is prohibited, and one-piece swimsuits are preferred. Consumption of alcohol is strictly forbidden in the streets.

Medical Care
Medical services are excellent in Jordan and most doctors are bilingual in Arabic and English. Larger hotels have a doctor on call. Travellers should carry your own prescription and medical insurance is essential.

Shopping
For visitors, there is a wide range of locally made handicrafts, hand-woven rugs and cushions, beautifully embroidered items and clothing, traditional pottery, glassware, silver jewellery embedded with semi-precious stones, Bedouin knives, coffee pots, marquetry work, antiques, and other artefacts.

Tipping
Most hotels and restaurants include a service charge in their bill, in which case it is not obligatory to tip waiters, but you can always add a little extra. 10% is the recommended amount.

Water
Water is a precious resource in Jordan and visitors are encouraged not to waste it. Hotels rated 3 stars and up have their own water filtering systems and their water is considered safe to drink. Elsewhere, bottled water is inexpensive and readily available.
