Day 2: Enjoy your stay at The Wallawwa

Enjoy your stay or join one of these optional tours offered by the hotel.

Negombo Fish Market with a Wallawwa chef.

This tour takes in the wholesale fish market beside the town’s main harbour as well as the local fish market near the beach where fish is sold by small-scale fishermen and third-party vendors. You will be accompanied by a hotel chef who will show you how to identify the freshest fish and advise which recipes these different types of fish would suit.

Behind the market is an authentic fishing beach where you will usually see fishermen pulling in smaller fish from the nets on their boats. These small fish are salt-washed and sun-dried and later added to curries or sambols which gives a more pungent fishy flavour to dishes. Along the shores of this beach, you can watch the fish (and purple squid) being soaked in huge vats of brine and being laid out to dry on hessian mats in the heat of the Sri Lankan sun.

Sri Lankan Cookery demonstration

Meet with one of The Wallawwa chefs at 11 am for an in-depth demonstration of how to make some of the stunning rice & curry dishes. You’ll learn about the spices used in the dishes and the different methods of preparing each of the delicious curries. The chef will select some fresh vegetables from our kitchen garden prior to the demonstration to use whilst cooking and you are very welcome to join him.

In the demonstration the chef will use clay pots to cook each curry; these clay chatties impart an authentic and distinctive flavour to Sri Lankan cuisine and have been used across the island for centuries. Villagers in rural areas use them for cooking on an open hearth. You can choose from one fish, chicken or seafood curry, along with a dhal (red lentil) curry and a selection of vegetable curries depending upon what is fresh and in season. The chef will also share with you his secrets for making the perfect rice accompaniment. You may get involved as much or as little as you wish and you’ll have many opportunities to taste the curries during the cooking process.

After the demonstration, enjoy a delicious lunchtime feast of the delicious curries you’ve seen prepared followed by a traditional Sri Lankan dessert.

Day 3: Head to the Central Highlands

Leave with your driver for a transfer to Nuwara Eliya. Bright green hills, thick dark forests, farmlands, and traditional homes characterise the landscapes of the Central Province and are known for its fertile tea plantations, spectacular views, and charming historic churches. Attractions nearby include the magnificent St. Clair Major Falls and Devon Falls, and the Castlereigh Reservoir, decorated with wonderful hiking trails and lookout points.

Stay 2 nights at Camellia Hills, a luxurious five-bedroom boutique bungalow hotel near Dickoya. From its verdant valley-side perch, views of the mirror-still Castlereagh Reservoir and surrounding tea-wrapped hills are spectacular.

Day 4: Enjoy your stay in the Central Highlands

Visit a tea factory.

Camellia Hills is surrounded by acres of verdant neatly plucked tea bushes that have been flourishing here for close to a century.

During this experience, you’ll learn all about the tea production process by visiting one of our local tea factories. The factories themselves are icons of the Hill Country; vast, atmospheric and filled with heavy machinery, some dating back over a century, these multi-windowed warehouses are where the magic process of tea production happens. The leaves are brought in from the tea gardens, dried, withered and rolled, before being fired to remove as much moisture as possible. Finally, they’re sorted into fragrant particle sizes ranging from the finest dust to the most prized variety, orange pekoe.

One of the factory managers will host you on this experience and take you on a guided tour, showing you the processes, introducing you to the machines and demonstrating how each of them works. You’ll also be accompanied by a Camellia Hills butler who can assist with any in-depth interpretation. In the end, you’ll have the opportunity to taste a few varieties of tea in an insightful tea tasting session. The factories have a few varieties of tea for sale so if you wish you can purchase some to take back home.

Day 6: Relax, or go on a hike

Activities you can do today.

Ella Rock - Hiking up Ella Rock is one of the most popular treks to do in Ella, but is also far more challenging than the easy climb up Little Adam’s Peak. The summit is 3,300m above sea level, and 1,000m higher than Ella town. The view from the top is one of the most spectacular in Sri Lanka. You need to allow 4-5 hours. Walk along the train tracks for about half an hour and begin the ascent up the slope through fruits fields and a tea plantation. A local guide is recommended and available en route.

Little Adam’s Peak - This is a scenic and easy hike with sensational views from the top of Little Adam’s Peak. Take a gentle stroll through a tea estate before ascending a short stretch of winding steps up to the top of the peak. From the top, there is a spectacular panorama featuring Ella Rock, rolling tea fields and the Ella gap. Plan to reach the summit for sunset.

Nine Arch Bridge is one of the most iconic bridges in Sri Lanka and is a stunning example of the incredible engineering prowess behind the island’s railway system. It is a 30-metre-high viaduct with dramatic, high arches.

Day 7: Journey south to Galle

Journey south along the coast to the historic city of Galle. Galle is the best example of a walled city built by the Portuguese in South Asia in the 16th Century. It was extensively fortified by the Dutch in the 17th century.

Stay 2 nights at Fort Bazaar, a handsome merchant’s home-turned-boutique hotel with 18 stylish guestrooms. Positioned on Church Street within a UNESCO-listed 17th-century fort, this spa hotel in Galle promises serenity, high-end service and gourmet modern dining, and makes a very welcoming retreat from the bustling cobbled streets of Galle Fort.

Day 8: Take a guided walk of the Galle Fort

Galle Fort is one of Sri Lanka’s most well-known holiday destinations, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a rich history and alluring present-day culture which is a melting pot of different nationalities and religions and combines old traditions with modern living. Go on a guided tour of Galle Fort with a dynamic host who was brought up in this unique town – he has many stories to share about its fascinating heritage, from the early traders to colonial invaders, and will introduce you to some of the people who inhabit the Fort today.

Wander through the crisscrossing streets, lined with arty boutiques, restaurants and old buildings which remain from the Dutch and British colonial periods, and observe the stunning heritage architecture and tranquil way of life here whilst listening to tales of the Fort’s past. Your host begins by describing the part the Fort played in connecting Sri Lanka with the early Persian, Greek, Roman and Arab traders, before sharing legends of age-old conflicts as nations battled for control of this key seaport. End the walk by meeting some of the locals who live here, perhaps sampling some traditional Sri Lankan cuisine or browsing the gallery of one of the island’s most prominent craftsmen.

Consider a boat ride on Koggala Lake, scattered with islands including Fish Eagle Island and Cinnamon Island. Swimming, surfing and snorkelling are possible in Unawatuna and Mirissa just 20 minutes away. Mirissa Water Sports offers several activities including snorkelling, sailing, river trips, sea kayaking and whale and dolphin spotting excursions. Seas surrounding Sri Lanka has been identified as one of the best areas in the world to spot the giant Blue Whale and the humpback has also recently been spotted
